Jannik Sinner won the Monte Carlo tournament for the first time by beating Carlos Alcaraz in two sets, 7-6(5) 6-3, in the final. For the Italian, the fourth Masters 1000 tournament also means overtaking the Spaniard in the ATP ranking: now he is number one in the world again.
Sinner prevailed in two hours and 15 minutes of play and won his 27th title of his career, the eighth 1000m. For the blue it is also the fourth in a row after Paris indoor, Indian Wells and Miami. After the elimination in the semifinals at the Australian Open and the surprise knockout with Mensik in Doha, the 24-year-old from San Candido managed to win Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo in the same season. The only one to achieve this since 1990 was Novak Djokovic in 2015.
It is the second title on clay for Sinner, after the ATP 250 in Umag 2022, which achieved the first Big Title on clay, which in 2025 saw him lose to Alcaraz in the final of both the Italian Internationals and Roland Garros. Missing the defense of the title is Alcaraz, who will return to the field next week in the ATP 500 in Barcelona. The blue, however, will be resting in the next few days.
Sinner: “Return to n.1 is important but the ranking is secondary”
«I don’t know how to comment on this week. Today we saw a very high level of tennis from both of us, despite the wind that continued to change.” Jannik Sinner commented thus on the victory of the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, on red clay, thanks to the success against Carlos Alcaraz, who also lost first place in the ranking. «The return to number 1 is important, but the ranking is secondary. I’m happy to have finally won an important tournament on this surface”, added Sinner, immediately after the end of the match.
